To Catch a Falling Star

"Dear Mother Tui, my sister found out she could waterbend today," Sokka started, sniffling in the cold winter air. "Katara's so happy...Mommy's happy, Daddy's happy. Everyone's happy." He took another breath. "But I don't get it. I'm her older brother, why can't I do anything yet?" Sokka felt the real tears coming this time. And the sniffling wasn't because it was below freezing outside. "Why can't I bend? I want to so badly...I'll bend anything. Anything." The tears were blurring his vision now. Hurriedly, Sokka took his mittened hand and wiped them away. "Mother Tui, I wish with all my heart that I can bend. I want my family to be proud of me. Amen." He slowly got up from his seated position and brushed off the snow had fallen on his snow coat.

"Katara, it's starting!" Sokka impatiently brushed the tent flap aside that separated his room from his sister's. Katara was buried under heaps of blankets and furs. He dug through the layers and gently shook his sister's shoulders. "Are you coming or not?"
Katara sleepily murmered, "Ughhh...no Sokka. The Northern Lights happen every year...let me sleep..." She let the last sentence drift off and turned to her other side.
"Fine, I'll watch them by myself." Sokka was already bundled in his coat and pulled on his boots. After making sure the igloo was tightly sealed, he shuffled out into the newly fallen snow.
In the sky, thousands of dazzling lights flew from the heavens and landed into the snow drifts. They were beautiful, iridescent, and burned with such fire that they looked alive.

Sokka felt the heat before he even saw the blinding flashing light. A bright orb of fire trailing with the colors of the Northern lights caused him to look away, but his mittens hands fumbled to clumsily catch it before it sank into snow. He braced for the impact, but the object was surprisingly light; it pulsated soothingly against his frozen fingers. It felt good; he embraced the warmth against the below freezing temperatures.
And that was how Sokka met Calcifer.

I thought it would pretty neat to do a cross over with Sokka from ATLA and Calcifer from Howl's Moving Castle...and even cooler if Calcifer was the source of Sokka's artificial fire bending (Since he's a fire demon and all). Together, these two would be invincible. I hope you enjoy the story that I thought up to go with it! (:
